DEP Issues Permit for Food Waste Recycling Facility in New Jersey

This week, the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection issued a Class C Recycling Center permit to Converted Organics of Woodbridge, LLC at the 20 th Anniversary Celebration held to commemorate the New Jersey Statewide Mandatory Source Separation and Recycling Act. NJFC President Linda Doherty was on hand to cheer the announcement because the issuance of this permit will allow construction to begin on the first of its kind food waste recycling facility in the United States.

The permit was presented to Converted Organics of Woodbridge, LLC of Boston, Massachusetts, the entity responsible for building and operating the recycling facility. Environmental Liability Management, Inc. (ELM) of Princeton, New Jersey, the environmental consulting/engineering firm was retained by Converted Organics to complete the permitting activities. Converted Organics will build and operate the 500 ton per day food waste recycling facility that will take food processor waste, de-packaged beverages, fruit, vegetable, meat and deli waste to produce a high quality all natural soil amendment.

The facility will be located at 75 Crows Mill Road, Keasbey, New Jersey, on property owned by Recycling Technology Development, LLC. All operations will be conducted inside the building. The end product has a unique combination of nutrition disease suppression and therefore will make an excellent soil amendment.

NJFC is currently planning to meet with representatives of the project to learn more about member support of this food waste recycling program.

NJFC Meets with Assembly Minority Leader Decroce

NJFC members held a private event with Assembly Minority Leader Alex DeCroce this week to discuss legislative initiatives and issues currently facing the food distribution industry in New Jersey.

NJFC members discussed a wide range of topics including Credit Card Interchange fees, the cost of Health Care, regulatory burdens and the high cost of doing business in New Jersey. NFJC will continue meeting with legislative leadership in both Houses to advocate the industry's position on the many issues that directly affect the food distribution business in New Jersey.

NJFC Loss Prevention Committee Works to ORT

As a centerpiece of the NJFC Loss Prevention Committee's agenda, the committee has continued its efforts to find solutions to reduce shrink caused by Organized Retail Theft and has developed a ³Retail Theft Bulletin² form to facilitate information sharing to help link shoplifting cases to larger organized retail theft rings.

The form allows NJFC members to share descriptions of suspects, locations of theft incidences, dates, times and a narrative of the incident. The form also provides contact information for the persons handling the investigation. The form has been distributed to the committee and will be made available on the newly developed NJFC website for download.

National Conference of State Legislatures

Last week, the Spring Forum meeting of the National Conference of State Legislatures (NCSL) was held in Washington D.C. At the conference, many industry issues were discussed including Credit Card Interchange Fees, Animal Identification, Agriculture Policy and Medicaid.

Food Marketing Institute Vice President John Motley spoke before the members of the NCSL Communications, Financial Services and Interstate Commerce Committee about the negative effect on business and consumers by highlighting how interchange fees differ from other types of credit card fees, the potential effects of interchange fees on state budgets, discussing the financial impact on consumers and exploring legislative and regulator solutions available to state legislators.

NJFC was pleased that New Jersey State Assemblyman Chivukula was on hand to represent New Jersey during the discussion. In addition, the NCSL approved several policy resolutions including a resolution supporting federal legislation that would allow interstate shipment of poultry and meat that has been state-inspected, and a resolution opposing efforts to make significant policy and statutory changes to the Medicaid program through regulation.
