PASSAGE OF PAID FAMILY LEAVE TO BE PRIORITY IN LAMEDUCK SESSION
This week, legislative leaders confirmed that NJ Governor Jon Corzine now has the support in Lameduck to seek passage of his Paid Family Leave proposal much to the dismay of NJFC and the entire business community in New Jersey. Paid Family Leave is an ill advised public policy that will clearly take NJ out of step with competing neighbor states and continue to reinforce the poor reputation of New Jersey’s business climate.

Next week, NJFC will initiate a campaign to contact legislative leaders and voice food industry opposition to this anti-business proposal because it will disrupt the workplace, create a tremendous hardship on members and mandates another entitlement program that NJ can not afford. We ask all NJFC members to respond to our call for action next week when you receive our email that will include industry arguments and contact information.

NJFC BIOSECURITY COMMITTEE TEAMS UP WITH NJ HOMELAND SECURITY ON DISTRIBUTION ISSUES
On Friday, NJFC Biosecurity members met with state Homeland Security officials, top brass from the State Office of Emergency Management, FMI, USDA and state health and agricultural agents to discuss plans to develop a food distribution model for the food sector in case of a natural or catastrophic emergency. Commodity support, critical supplies and assets, logistics, transportation, power restoration, credentialing essential personnel, economic factors and communications were among the topics of discussion.

State and federal officials are committed to partnering with NJFC to develop this unique emergency preparedness program so members will have a solid plan and specific clearances to react during an emergency that would have otherwise disrupted the food supply. As the program is developed, NJFC will continue to update the membership on our efforts.
